“…you have the power to represent a family’s truths by photographing their reality.”
This breakout goes way beyond the rules & technical side of documentary. Topics like defining what is holding you back, shame & vulnerability, & the importance of truth telling.
And the 2nd half is the business side! I’m still shocked it is only $25. It is worth so much more. Felicia’s writing is so powerful. She just became one of the one’s that I will buy anything she puts her name on.

I very much enjoyed participating in this BO and can fully recommend it to everyone who is interested in capturing life as is in a personal, yet artistic manner. The materials are very thought through and touch upon areas which have not yet been covered by the other documentary type workshops and breakouts on CC. The BO really helps defining your why in photography. It is a must for every documentary-style lover.

I jumped into the last few days of this breakout because I thought a documentary approach might help me in lifestyle sessions. What I found out is that I have always been a documentary photographer at heart, and that capturing those moments that we like to shy away from is important, healing, and beautiful. There is so much good information here, and Felicia is as unapologetic in her approach to this style as she wants us all to be in Documenting our worlds. It was both challenging and freeing to capture the moments of my day as they really were, and not a little cleaned up. :) It was truly inspiring and made me really think about who I am as a photographer and as a Mom, and that’s what I like to get out of a breakout. Awesome breakout!

Wow. This break out was so deep and thought provoking. If inspires you to dig deep and explore what it really means to document our lives or the lives of clients. If you are looking to find more truth and meaning in your work, love documentary photography and really want to grow then start here. You won’t be disappointed.

I couldn’t recommend more this breakout, Felicia is such a talented photographer and an amazing teacher. A lot of material for just 25$. One of the best breakouts i bought so far.

My favourite thing about this breakout is the way it made me stop and really think about why I do this, why it is important to me and to my kids, and how I choose which moments demand that I pull out my camera. There is SO much information and so many thought-provoking questions and ideas that are sure to inspire any photographer to at least try the documentary approach. Felicia is a thoughtful and generous educator with a knack for telling it how it is in the sweetest way possible. You can absolutely not go wrong with spending $25 on this one!

Everything everyone else said! Whether you are brand new to the documentary approach, or you have been doing it for a while, or even if you are ready to go into business with it, this breakout is for YOU! Not only does Felicia dive into the nuts and bolts of documentary and documentary business, but most importantly, she pours her soul into the WHY. Why should we make these images? Why are we afraid to? She will teach you how to unapologetically photograph your (or someone else’s) real life. All the things we will truly appreciate seeing in an album, 1, 5, 10, 50 years from now, without fear, without judgement, without apologies.

This break is out the REAL DEAL. I can’t being to describe how beautifully and thoughtfully Felicia has shared her passion through this course. The PDF is packed with information, and it’s easy to connect with what she has to say on being true to yourself and your life. The bonus videos walk you through so many steps that she takes, from shooting to culling to editing. For $25, this is an absolute steal! If you are looking for your why, if you are looking for a way to creative meaningful images that take place anywhere at anytime, this is it. I can’t recommend it enough!

If you are even a little bit interested in documentary photography, get yourself this breakout. Not only does Felicia go over the fundamentals of shooting with the documentary approach, she also shares insight on how she grew her documentary photography business over the years. But most importantly, she helps us to see how crucial it is to document and share ALL facets of life, not just the happy and beautiful ones, so that others may see themselves reflected in the not so perfectly curated moments of life, too. Loved this breakout so much.

Felicia has done a really outstanding job, putting so much time into this breakout, and for only $25 it’s truely a steal! I love all the video footage, and the videos where she is actually shooting she is also talking overtop telling you what and why which is what i really love to see the most. She has been so active in the forum encouraging everyone and trying to help them overcome their hurdles. If you can you NEED to get in on this before the live run is over, but if you miss it you’re still going to get so much information. Weather you’re in business or not it’s crucial for understanding documentary photography! I just cannot say enough about this breakout really.

I am in the process of changing to more and more documentary style photography and I loved this breakout. Felicia is great! The first video alone made a huge impression on me just by seeing how great she interacts with the family. The PDF also has a lot of great info, very clear and well written. Love it!

I’m so, so happy that I bought this breakout. I have always been drawn to documentary photography and this breakout is so inspiring. I am only half way through the materials and have already learned so many things about documentary photography that I didn’t know and am already being pushed creatively. Felicia is not only an amazing photographer but she is extremely helpful and I have found her feedback very helpful. I was worried that I would suffer because I hadn’t taken The Documentary Approach yet but I am not at all! This breakout stands on it’s own and it is already my favorite breakout I’ve taken yet.

I arrived to this BO through Kirsten Lewis. Felicia is a very talented photographer. One of the most important things I’ve learned from her is the approach to families. How she gets close to those families and gets those kids to trust and like her. I needed fresh air, and I found it with her!

I am always so inspired by Felicia’s work, her words, her being. She has put her heart and soul and her incredible wealth of knowledge into this breakout. You know those times when you’re reading and you say to yourself, “damn, that’s so good!” Yep, I say that so many times going through this breakout. I have heard someone already describe “Documenting the Unapologetic Life” as “life-changing”…and that couldn’t be more true! Felicia’s perspective, her vulnerability, and how she shares her point of view forces you to cut through all of the crap and realize that there are far more important, valuable moments that we might be missing because we aren’t willing to be vulnerable ourselves. Guys, you NEED this breakout in your lives. I can already tell you that I will be coming back and referring to this wisdom time and time again. This is beyond!

Such an amazing breakout! I was hooked by documentary family photography recently and It was a fantastic opportunity to see how does she work, how does she see the world when she working and to get some impression about all the deep feelings around it. It was also a great self discovery and self awareness journey for me as a beginner! Thank you!

Felicia has taken the breakout to a whole new level. She created Documenting the Unapologetic Life, and filled it with the most valuable insights into the world of documentary family photography and she isn’t holding anything back.

Making the leap into this genre isn’t always easy, but Documenting the Unapologetic Life is a beautiful and relatable insight into the what, why and how to do let go of your fears and jump in head first. We all need the reminder that every part of our lives is important and that no matter what it looks like, we should not apologize, we should embrace our reality and own it. There is so much information inside that it is almost unbelievable! She shares behind the scenes videos, editing, even some invaluable insight into creating a business that works for you without compromising your artistic style! For $25… You know you’ve spent more $ on some uncomfortable shoes that you’ve worn once.

If you’ve been thinking about it, stop… just buy it! Don’t apologize for it either ;)

I am blown away but the amount of content that comes with this breakout, for just $25! Not only that, Felicia is one of the most interactive and engaging teachers I’ve had to date. She understands that developing our entire sense of self is what’s essential to truly documenting someone else!

It is clear that Felicia is passionate about documenting, it comes through in her writing. After reading and re-reading her E-book included here, I felt inspired to step out of my comfort zone to take pictures of things I normally wouldn’t, even if it was only for myself. I would recommend this to anyone, whether you want a push in the right direction or to be able to admire some beautiful work, there is plenty of inspiration to be found in this workshop.

What an awesome, uplifting, and freeing breakout! It reminded me to give myself permission to embrace the chaos that is real life and to enjoy these crazy moments while my little ones are young. And if you are considering transitioning or starting a business in documentary family sessions, this breakout has some ah-mazing resources and tips to get you started and to be successful. Such a wealth and breath of information for such a low price. I highly recommend this to all mothers and those seeking to document “real life”.

This was such a good investment. Felicia answered the questions I’ve had, as well as the questions I didn’t think to ask. I’ve learned so much about documentary photography and now I feel like I can confidently tell people what I do and not second guess myself.

Felicia is clearly passionate about documentary photography. This is not a breakout so much about technique, but more about the documentary approach to making pictures. Felicia talks about the importance of truth telling and encourages us to examine the why behind the taking (or avoiding taking) a photograph that documents reality as we experience it. The videos are really useful to round out the information presented in the pdf. I have been using a documentary approach for years as a hobbyist so while the information is not new for me, it was valuable for me to see things from Felicia’s perspective and it has inspired me to continue making the best documentary photos I can. For me the best part of this BO is the forum and Felicia’s participation in it, so I encourage you to join us for the live run!

I finally got some free minutes to start watching the videos from your breakout and your Behind the Scenes clip brought me to tears. May be a tad hormonal right now but really it is a testament to the love and passion that I feel in your Photography. The way you were with the kids was so wonderful and I can see how they trusted you and therefore allowed you to make such beautiful and honest photographs. Wonderful course! Can’t believe it’s only $25 for such a wealth of knowledge.

I finished this BO in less than two days because I could.not.stop.reading. I am speechless at the breadth and depth of information, insight, and inspiration @feliciachang has woven into this relatively short PDF. She is thorough and concise and honest and genuine and draws participants to find those qualities in themselves and their photography as well. This is quite possibly the best $25 I’ve spent.

Felicia’s insight with Documenting the Unapologetic Life has been so eye-opening. Her appreciation for all facets of life shines through in her explanations of WHY documenting the not-so-visable (and instagrammable) parts of life are worth holding onto. A huge takeaway for me was that NORMAL deserves airtime in the same way that happiness, excitement, and joy get their turn in front of the camera. There’s no need to shy away from it– and documenting the unapologetic life is just as important as living it!

I loved how this breakout is a goldmine for photographers of all levels; it has all the basics of documentary photography for new photographers, but it’s also encouraged me to think about what I want to remember, reinforced the idea to document what’s real, and reminded me to not give two f*cks about it. Big thumbs up for me.

Hello everyone. Despite being in another country and not fully master the English, I decided to take the risk and take this course because I was captivated by the pictures of Felicia. His way of explaining, his warmth and how she makes everything look simple, captivated me. And I never thought there was a community waiting to share, and all in a course of only $ 25

I know there are a lot of breakouts in CM, why this one?
After spending a lot of money on different breakouts, now the first things I look at are the teacher’s work and her personality (you can kinda of tell from social media). I’ve been following Felicia for about two years since I knew she was shooting family documentary. I fell in love with her work first, and then started really like her as a human being by reading her instagram and the interaction during the documentary approach workshop. Felicia is very honest and patient and has very solid knowledge on family documentary, so no doubt this breakout is a MUST buy even before I read the description. “Unapologetic Life” is such a good description for our real life, no matter you are into documentary photography or not, we should remind ourselves that no matter good or not good, our life now is just perfect for now, and that’s the beauty of this genre of photography.

Although I’m very sure that everyone buy this breakout will not be regret, I still waited until I read the whole materials before coming here to write a review, because I know how much people want a honest review.
This breakout was not written following the normal logic of general photography (light and composition) like all other breakouts, but it was written specifically on “family documentary photography”, and I think that’s the beauty of this breakout. You’ll find a lot of introspective analysis on why you want to shoot this way. Even I’m already a pretty experienced documentary photographer, I still so need of this part, and I need to dig in more later. And I think as a new photographer to this genre, it is so important for the introspective part because you’ll understand the beauty of this genre so much better.
Another big part of this breakout is the business part, including the marketing and money things, the challenge you’ll face during client sessions, and the whole process of shooting a day in the life client session (videos from shooting to culling to post-process), and so on. This is very valuable because it’s just for documentary photographers, which I think it very different than general photography business.

Anyway, no matter you are just curious on documentary photography or you are an experience documentary photographer, you should buy this, and buy it now so that you can interact with Felicia when it’s live!!

Felicia has poured every ounce of her heart and soul into this extraordinary breakout – at $25 there’s nothing to think about – grab it up!
If you want to feel inspired to shoot your family just as they are (NO APOLOGIES!), if you want to be armed with more than luck and a prayer when shooting uncontrolled chaos, if you want to let go of all the rules you feel bound too because deep down you know that it’s complete insanity to lie in your family albums, if you want a glimpse into the nuts and bolts of shooting this way for a living, and if you want to step into the holiday season ready to document the world in its full, unapologetic glory – this breakout is for you.
Felicia is a gifted photographer, talented teacher, and a completely open book. Worth every penny times a thousand!

Not every photographer makes a good teacher. Not every teacher is a good writer. But Felicia is both. Her writing is poignant and challenging, clear, humorous and invitational. I am going to be a better photographer because of her Breakout.

Felicia has poured all of her heart, soul and passion for documentary photography into this breakout. If you are a documentary photographer or even a bit “documentary curious”, Felicia will win you over to the value in photographing the real lives of others. She walks you what its like to photograph hard moments and why its worth it with practical tips and lots and lots of inspiration. Finally, she talks about the business of documentary family photography – something that most of us are still figuring out as we go along. There are very few resources out there for aspiring documentary photographers and this is definitely one of the best.

A few years ago I met Felicia , I remember seeing her images and thinking, wow, She is a truth teller, capturing the moments that actually happened, and I’m convinced the moments that one day you will truly miss. She is a the type of human that brings you gorgeous flowers and wine when you invite them over, laughs with you, cries with you, feels the ups and downs of life with you, and that all flows through into her work and that’s what makes it shine.
I think the power in this breakout is in her story telling. How she draws you in with her 58 page soul stirring e-book and gorgeous images. I laughed, and I cried, truly. Images that made me smile, interviews that made me cry because they scream “I feel that too” and “this is truth” “this is the nitty, gritty, beautiful, heartbreaking life that needs to be captured exactly the way it’s being shown.” Felicia has such a gift in her work of making it relate to your truths. She dives in to the business side as well and shows you what she has done to have success shooting documentary style work, takes you behind the scenes to show her why, and sets you up to take the images that matter. It’s so obvious she poured everything into this, and it did not disappoint.

I’ve barely made it through the PDF and it already feels like I got more than my $25 worth of gold. There’s still the videos and the assignments and so much more. I’ve been documenting for many years now and I’m so grateful to get this refresher and your take on documentary work. You’ve put everything you have into sharing this information and it shows. I am in shock that all the material you receive from Felicia’s breakout is only $25. I’m completely floored. The amount of knowledge, advice, wisdom and insight that Felicia shares is mind boggling. Maybe it’s because I’m in a place in my photography journey where I really need to hear everything that she has to say. But I believe that no matter where you are in your journey, especially in this genre, you will benefit.

Why? Because she teaches you not only HOW, but WHY you need to document moments in your photos unapologetically, truthfully and intentionally. It’s the essence of this breakout and the truth behind this art form.

Felicia weaves into the reading materials her own experiences as an artist, a professional and a mom, and through the videos you get to see the methodology she uses to implement her techniques. She works though a shoot by gaining the trust of the families and connecting with them, thereby allowing them to be their true authentic selves. Children are really drawn to her. Every step of her actions and thought process is explained in her many videos with her voiceover and it is so enlightening to watch and hear her in action. It’s as if we are there along side her.

I highly recommend this steal of a breakout. If you are on the fence, just get off and push the buy button. You will not be sorry you did!

When you look back at old family photos, what are the things you enjoy seeing the most?

What I love the most are the ones that show me what my childhood looked like, and most importantly, how it felt. The ones that suddenly allow me to remember things I had otherwise forgotten. The ones that made me laugh at how ridiculously huge my mom’s shoulder pads were in the 80s, or how I covered my room in shawls and lace in high school because I was so obsessed with Stevie Nicks.

Documenting The Unapologetic Life reminds you how and why moments like these are valuable, and through the practice of documentary photography, shows how to elevate them into works of art. Felicia provides SO many tools and shares her wisdom to help capture your life as it is, without having to minimize, hide, or say sorry about any of it.

Oh — and then there’s this WHOLE SECOND SECTION on the business side of documentary family photography and day in the life sessions. But you know, no big deal. Just some invaluable info on establishing your business and finding the right clients without sacrificing your vision. Seriously, this is a steal at $25!!
