Protect your photography gear on rainy days

weather protection for cameras

No matter what the weather is like on a wedding day, it isn’t possible for me to reschedule. I have to be prepared for anything which includes rain, snow, and blowing sand. Knowing that spring is right around the corner, I always make sure to have a camera cover in my bag. These are a few of my top picks to protect your photography gear this spring.

1. Lenscoat Raincoat

The Raincoat is lightweight and waterproof but it is also made from a quiet material. That is especially nice during a wedding ceremony! It has a hook and loop bottom closure for tripods, monopods and manual focus. Each cover is tape sealed (except the Raincoat RS Small) with two cinch straps on each end. It is designed to have an open back so that no special eyepiece is needed. It includes a mesh storage pouch and is available in multiple sizes to fit the camera and lens combo of your choice. Starting at $49.99

2. Think Tank Hydrophobia

Available in two sizes, Hydrophobia camera covers fit most DSLRs and lens combinations. It comes with an external camera strap that is pre-connected to metal D rings on the rain cover. That makes it unnecessary to remove the strap already attached to the body. It has a lens strap inside the cover that allows the external strap to fully support the weight of the camera and lens. It does require a special eyepiece to allow proper attachment of the cover. It also has an eyepiece flap that helps protect the viewfinder. A clear window on the back keeps the LCD screen visible and there is enough room in the cover for changing your memory cards or batteries. Hydrophobias start at $149.75; eyepieces are $35

3. Vortex Storm Jacket

This camera cover is available in four colors and five sizes. It also has two different models. Each cover has a drawstring on each end. Once it is closed and secure on both ends, your camera and lens are fully protected. Their pro model is designed with an additional opening allowing you to mount your camera on a monopod or tripod. It comes in a zippered pocket that is easy to attach to your camera bag. Starting at $38

  1. I had no idea these even existed! I’m not a wedding photographer, but these would have come in handy when I was taking pictures of my boys playing in the falling snow!
