Self Portraits hold a special place in my heart when it comes to my own personal journey with photography because it was literally what I shot to learn photography and find/use my voice.
I’m also a pretty introvert person so shooting myself came easier to me than shooting others. They are also a whole lot of fun, especially once you get past the not wanting to be on the other side of the camera part.
So, here are 5 self portrait Ideas for people who hate to be in front of the camera!
You can totally get creative with photographing yourself without having your face in the image at all or with it not being the main focus of the image.
2. Artistic out of focus
I love that with an artistic out of focus image you can portray a quiet beauty, a strong message and a viewer left in thought as to what story your image is telling.
3. Mother and child(ren)
Taking some photos with our children is another great way to get ourselves in front of the camera! Just for fun or posed, it’s great to know we’re making memories with our children and leaving them some wonderful keepsakes they will cherish.

4. Pieces of me
Have you ever stopped to notice the little things about yourself that you love?
The colour of your hair, the mole on your shoulder, the definition in your muscles, the beauty of your collar bone, the shape and colour of your eyes, the colours in your outfit, the way you did you hair, your favorite pair of shoes, your tattoos – it’s all a self portrait. Everything you love because…
your handwriting. the way you walk. which china pattern you choose. it’s all giving you away. everything you do shows your hand. everything is a self portrait. everything is a diary.
― Chuck Palahniuk, Diary
Not any old theme though. Something that is telling of YOU! Perhaps you collect something or have a little habit, perhaps you are a coffee lover (aren’t we all?), perhaps you’re really into fashion – like Palahniuk says, everything is a self portrait. So include things you LOVE that are part of you! Make it a theme and run with it – be inspired by all those lovely little things that make you, you!
