How it Works

WORKSHOPS: FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Please tell me more about your workshops.

The CMU workshop is a 100% online classroom experience. Once you sign up, you have access to a course forum that is open 24 hours a day so that you can learn and join discussions on your own schedule.

Each week students receive a set of course materials– these materials generally include a PDF and/or videos. Throughout the week, instructors and TAs are present in the forum every day to answer questions and offer encouragement. Students receive an assignment each week that pertains to the topics covered in the course materials and class discussion throughout the week.

Full Participation students engage in an interactive online classroom experience that includes instructor-led group discussions and detailed, personalized guidance for the duration of the workshop. Full participation students post their assignments in the forum and receive instructor and TA critiques each week. They also have lifetime access to a Workshop Alumni forum for continued peer discussion after the course concludes.

Study Along students have access to all materials and are able to view all content and conversation in the main workshop forum. They also receive access to their own private Study Along subforum for peer study groups and image shares. Study along students will not be able to ask the instructor questions or request instructor feedback on their assignments, but they can follow along with instructor critiques of the Full Participation assignments.

Whether you are a Full Participation student or a Study Along student, the course materials are yours to keep.

We offer workshops to suit every student, whether you are brand new to photography or are a seasoned pro. If you’d like to see all of our available workshops, click here.

Registration is nontransferable, nonrefundable, and valid only for the specific CMU program(s) that students sign up for.

If you have additional questions about the CMU workshop experience, please CONTACT US — we’d be happy to answer your questions!

What is the difference between Full Participation and Study Along?

Full Participation students engage in an interactive online classroom experience that includes instructor-led group discussions and detailed, personalized guidance for the duration of the workshop. Full participation students post their assignments in the forum and receive instructor and TA critiques each week. They also have lifetime access to a Workshop Alumni forum for continued peer discussion after the course concludes.

Study Along students have access to all materials and are able to view all content and conversation in the main workshop forum. If you have additional questions about which one is right for you, click on CONTACT US in the menu bar above– we’d be happy to answer your questions!

Do you have a workshop catalog?

The best place to see our upcoming workshops is by date on our calendar, but if you’d like to see all of our available workshops click here!

Do I need to be a member to participate in a workshop?

No– all CMU workshops and Breakouts are open to everyone!

How long will I have access to the workshop materials?

A personal copy of the workshop materials, including PDFs, videos, critiques, and any content you may wish to copy from the workshop forum, is yours to keep indefinitely. You will have access to the workshop forum for eight weeks once class begins, so be sure to download whatever you may need during that time.

How long will I have access to the workshop forum?

You’ll have access to the workshop forum for eight weeks after the start of the class. Don’t forget to download everything you need prior to that date!

If you are a full participation student, you also have lifetime access to the alumni forum for your course.

Do I have to be online at a certain time of day?

Our workshops are set up so that you can participate when it’s convenient for you. You’ll have 24 hour access to the forum, so you can post your questions and photographs at any time of day.

The workshop I’d like to take starts in a few months. When can I sign up?

Registration opens the month before the workshop starts. Lifetime members can register on the first Thursday of the month, between 11am and 2pm (est). Regular members and non-members can register the following Monday. So, if you’d like to take a workshop that starts in March, you can register on the first Thursday in February if you are a lifetime member and the following Monday if you are not.

I’m new to this and I’d like to take a workshop. Where do I start?

If you have a new DSLR or you’d like to get off of Program/Auto mode, then we suggest that you start with Shooting 101: First Steps with a DSLR. If you are ready to take full control of your camera in manual mode, then Shooting 102: Mastering Manual Exposure is the right class for you! If you have questions or would like more advice about where to start, we’d be happy to help you decide– simply click on the CONTACT US link in the menu bar!

What is the difference between a workshop and a Breakout?

CMU workshops are multi-week, interactive classroom experiences. Each week students receive a set of course materials (so, if you are taking a four week course you will receive four sets of materials)-– these materials generally include a PDF and/or videos. Throughout the week, instructors and TAs are present in the forum every day to answer questions and offer encouragement. Students receive an assignment each week that pertains to the topics covered in the course materials and class discussion throughout the week. Full participation students receive instructor and TA feedback on every assignment and personalized guidance to acquire the covered skills. Workshop forums are open for eight weeks, although the materials are yours to keep forever.

Breakouts, on the other hand, consist of one set of materials. In the Breakout forum, participants can start discussions, share photographs, and interact with other Breakout participants. Occasionally, the Breakout presenter will also join in the discussions as well, although interaction between participants and presenters is limited. Breakout forums are open for one to two weeks, although the materials are yours to keep forever.

If you have additional questions about CMU workshops or Breakouts, please CONTACT US — we’d be happy to answer your questions!

Do you offer gift certificates?

We do! If you’d like to purchase a Breakout or Workshop gift voucher for someone, click here.
