Set yourself up for success with this detailed course that covers everything you need to know about starting a photography business. This online workshop discusses everything from business legalities to goal setting, setting yourself apart in a crowded market, equipment, marketing, client interaction, pricing, branding, and more. Engage in discussions and assignments, all that are customized towards your unique business goals. This four-week course will give you the confidence and direction you need to not only start a business, but position yourself for profitability and success as well. This course has four detailed PDFs and covers everything you need to know to successfully start a photography business.

Kristy Dooley lives in Vermont with her husband and two daughters. She has a background in business, marketing, and education, and runs a successful family photography business. She finds equal joy in both being behind the lens, and the details of running a business. Her photography style emphasizes the connections and joy within families, all within the beautiful surroundings on her state.

Study Along students will have access to all materials and will be able to view all content and conversation in the main workshop forum and receive access to their own private subforum for peer study groups and image shares. Study along students will not be able to ask the instructor questions or request instructor feedback on their assignments.
Welcome & Preassignment
Reading: learn how to set appropriate and realistic goals; create a mission statement; define your ideal client; genres and specialization, branding, setting yourself apart from your competition.
Assignment: creating goals; defining your mission; who is your ideal client.
Reading: effective client communication and follow-up; blogging; portfolio building and model calls; client interaction; web presence.
Assignment: create a series of email template for client communication; determine your blogging schedule; evaluate and improve your web presence.
Reading: pricing; networking; branding; prints vs. digital; in person vs. online sales.
Assignment: determine pricing and create packages (digital or prints); determine online or in-person sales and why.
Reading: legalities; insurance; equipment; contracts and model releases; bookkeeping; and referral programs.
Assignment: research and familiarize yourself with the laws on business licenses, insurance, etc., in your area; learn how to market your favorite products to clients.
The CMU workshop is a 100% online classroom experience. Once you sign up, you have access to a course forum that is open 24 hours a day so that you can learn and join discussions on your own schedule.
Each week students receive a set of course materials– these materials generally include a PDF and/or videos. Throughout the week, instructors and TAs are present in the forum every day to answer questions and offer encouragement. Students receive an assignment each week that pertains to the topics covered in the course materials and class discussion throughout the week.
Full Participation students engage in an interactive online classroom experience that includes instructor-led group discussions and detailed, personalized guidance for the duration of the workshop. Full participation students post their assignments in the forum and receive instructor and TA critiques each week. They also have lifetime access to a Workshop Alumni forum for continued peer discussion after the course concludes.
Study Along students have access to all materials and are able to view all content and conversation in the main workshop forum. They also receive access to their own private Study Along subforum for peer study groups and image shares. Study along students will not be able to ask the instructor questions or request instructor feedback on their assignments, but they can follow along with instructor critiques of the Full Participation assignments.
Whether you are a Full Participation student or a Study Along student, the course materials are yours to keep.
