Memories at the coast: Beach, family and Lensbaby

As a photographer, there are few things as wonderful as playing with a new lens. Each focal length allows you to see the world in a fresh way and it can be a fun challenge to make the unique characteristics of a piece of gear align with your style and personality. And every once in a while, you discover a lens that matches your artistic voice so perfectly that you want to cry at the thought of sending it back to the rental company — it simply MUST find a home in your bag.

Marcie Reif of Giggle Prints Photography in Atlanta, Georgia chose to rent the Lensbaby Sweet 35 to capture her family vacation this summer. A manual focus lens with the unique blur of the Lensbaby line-up was a bold choice; it can take some time to get used to shooting with these, especially when trying to photograph small children bound to move and wiggle. However, Marcie was a quick student and it didn’t take long to see that she and the Sweet 35 were meant to be together.

In her beach vacation images, Marcie uses the gentle blur of Lensbaby to create an almost dreamlike effect that perfectly matches my own memories of childhood summers at the beach. The motion of the Sweet 35’s blur echoes the movement of breezes through hair, little feet running along the boardwalk, fingers combing through the sand, and waves splashing against the shore. In Marcie’s hands, it was the ideal lens choice to capture this week in her children’s lives.
